Unlike other major supermarkets, Schnuks is completely independent. As a privately held company, Schnuks management operates without influence from the public stock market. Despite its independent status, the chain employs 15,000 Americans and generates over $2.6 billion every year in gross revenues.

Today, Schnuck Markets, Inc., the company that owns and operates the Schnuks brand of supermarkets, has expanded into several states. The family-owned grocery chain now has over 100 stores spread across Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana.

The Seeds of Schnuks

Edwin Schnuck opened his own meat business in 1937, which expanded into a retail store only two years later with the assistance of his wife, Anna. The Shnuck family sold mostly meats, candies, and pastries from their stores during their early years of operation. Under the leadership of their children, more Schnuks stores started opening around St. Louis.

Known around the city for their high-quality meats, the Schnuks supermarket exploded in popularity after they purchased a major grocery location in 1947. Five years later, Edwin and his sons officially founded Schnuck Markets, Inc. and established themselves as a full-scale grocery enterprise.

Rapid growth and modernization of their supply chain in the 1960s and 1970s turned Schnuks into what it is today. With mass production facilities and warehouses now in their name, they were able to cement themselves as a mainstay in the greater St. Louis area. Around this time, Schnuks introduced pharmacies and bakeries into their supermarkets.

Although the first Schnuks bakery opened in 1961, it was not until the 1990s when Schnuks started investing heavily in their bakeries. Since then, their famous bakeries have made the Schnuks brand synonymous with fresh baked goods.
